Watercolor  Workshop

--Plein Air on a Greek Island--

The air and light of Greece has attracted artists for a longer time than any other place known to mankind.

Pelican by Crystal BesharaCanadian artist and teacher Crystal Beshara has teamed with host Michael Shepherd of Paros Hospitality to offer superior instruction and hospitality in an incomparable location.

You will experience traditional Greek village streets with doors and verandas in contrasting shadows and bright sun; white and blue Cycladic architecture contrasting with bright flowers and multi-coloured fishing boats--all with an aura of antiquity.

In the mediums of watercolour or pen and ink with watercolour you will enhance your ability to simplify your subject to get to the essence of plein-air painting.  We will improve your observational skills through timed drawing exercise and quick gesture sketches while maintaining the essentials of perspective drawing.

Other facets of the workshop include producing informative thumbnail sketches for your final paintings, recording your surroundings by creating texture and colour in a few brush strokes.  Crystal says, "You will create whimsical, colourful memories infused with an inimitable experience."

The experience is what sets this workshop apart from others.  Everything a Greek island has to offer will be available to you on the island hoppers favourite, Paros.

The daily schedule allows free time for beaches, shopping, water sports, antiquity viewing--whatever your interest.  Non-painting partners are catered to as well.  Oh, and everyone always raves about the food.  Plan on lots of walking or swimming or you will gain weight from the plentiful dishes even if they are Mediterranean cuisine from local ingredients.

For one fee our Paros & Athens Workshop covers lodging, some meals, transportation, excursions and painting instruction.  Greek fun and friendliness are free extras.  Airfare to and from Greece not included but Michael and Crystal will help with details of coordinating arrivals and departures from Athens.

Due to popular request we also offer an optional extra week to visit the major sites in Athens and the Greece mainland.  Take a look at Art & Antiquities  This is a flexible itinerary to be adjusted to suit you.

Greece:  A European country like no other.  You cannot turn a corner without seeing remnants of the ancient civilization.  Athens is a must see for anyone who wants to walk in the footsteps of Socrates.

The history of the Cyclades predates even that of Athens with the added attraction to artists of crisp air and brilliant colors.  Included in this group are dramatic Santorini and posh Mykonos.  Paros is the hospitable island with just the right proportions of culture, people, shops and other activities and an over generous supply of fine beaches with warm water and charming tavernas.  Paros is a blending of the busy, touristy towns of Parikia and Naoussa with numerous small villages, our two favorites being Piso Livadi and Lefkas.  We see Piso Livadi as an archetypical Mediterranean port.  Lefkas is a traditional Greek hill village just off the main stream of tourism with natural nooks and crannies to catch the artist's eye.  Quaint rural subjects abound.

Paros Hospitality accommodation has the plain Cycladic architecture that you see everywhere; we offer the same clean private bathrooms and balconies that you find elsewhere.  The difference is our experience and friendliness.  We have traveled through-out the world and know how to balance guests' needs for company and information with privacy and discovery.
